Act 2 : Scene 3 Summary – The Merchant of Venice

Introduction of Jessica

This brief scene introduces us to the character of Jessica, Shylock’s daughter. She is pained to see Launcelot leave her father’s house. She feels that Launcelot was a ‘merry devil’ and now the house would become more miserable. She further gives him a ducat and a letter to be delivered to Lorenzo. Launcelot says that she is the ‘most sweet Jew’ and bidding her farewell has made him emotional .

Jessica’s Contempt

After Launcelot leaves, Jessica talks about how she is ashamed of being Shylock’s daughter. She even calls it a ‘heinous sin’. She mentions that she shares nothing with her father but his blood. She hopes that Lorenzo would keep his promise and marry her.
