Introduction of Jessica
This brief scene introduces us to the character of Jessica, Shylock’s daughter. She is pained to see Launcelot leave her father’s house. She feels that Launcelot was a ‘merry devil’ and now the house would become more miserable. She further gives him a ducat and a letter to be delivered to Lorenzo. Launcelot says that she is the ‘most sweet Jew’ and bidding her farewell has made him emotional .
After Launcelot leaves, Jessica talks about how she is ashamed of being Shylock’s daughter. She even calls it a ‘heinous sin’. She mentions that she shares nothing with her father but his blood. She hopes that Lorenzo would keep his promise and marry her.
