Launcelot, the Sharp Wit
The scene opens in Portia’s garden where Launcelot and Jessica are talking. Launcelot, tells her of her father’s sins and further that she is also damned because is a Jew. However, Jessica tells him that her husband has saved her as he converted her to a Christian by marrying her. However, Launcelot says that it was not of much help, as her husband had committed a mistake, because if this continued, the price of the pork would rise. Lorenzo comes and tells him to prepare dinner. Launcelot gives some witty replies to him and Lorenzo praises his word play.
Jessica admires Portia
After Launcelot leaves, Lorenzo asks Jessica view’s about Portia. She praises her and says that Bassanio was fortunate enough to win her hand. Then, after having a small love-like conversation, the two depart to have dinner which Launcelot has prepared for them.
