Question 19 : While purchasing fabrics for tailored clothes, describe five qualities which we should check for in the fabric. In each case, mention what test we can do on the spot to verify each quality.

Answer : The five qualities which we should check for in the fabric are:

Weave Firmness This can be tested by scratching or stretching the fabric to check that the threads do not shift easily. If they do, the seams of the garment may slip or develop holes around the stitches.

Uniformity of Weave Hold up the fabric against the light to show any uneven weaving, weak spots or imperfections.

Weft Perpendicular to Selvedge Check this property, as oblique weft will mean that the fabric is ‘off grain’, resulting in the dress stretching out of shape after it is stitched.

Even Colour The dye colour or print colour should be uniform across the fabric with no misprints or back areas.

No Wrinkles The fabric should not show any wrinkles after momentary crushing with the hand, otherwise the dress made out of it will get crumpled easily.

Question 20 : “Money is one of the deciding factor in the selection of clothes”. Justify the statement.

Answer : Yes, to certain extent, this is true, as there are several factors which influence the cost of clothes such as type of fabric, the finishes given, type of weave, hand woven, etc. Hand woven fabrics or embroidery is always expensive. A general feeling is that expensive clothes are best. But an intelligent customer can buy fabric at lower price which can solve his purpose. One should not get carried away by advertisements or by tempting displays to buy clothes from shops with beautiful decor. Sometimes smart salesmanship may force the customer to pay more.
